Words For The Birds
This past Oktoberfest we shared some German phrases to help you clearly understand the season. We taught you things like how to ask for more beer, cheers, and the words to our favorite songs.
Well, that was such a hit we thought we’d bring you more fun German phrases that may come in handy all year long! We’re starting the series with
Sie hat einen Vogel
So you know how America has “crazy cat ladies”? Well Germans have crazy bird ladies… and men.
Let us explain.
While the term crazy cat lady generally refers to a single woman with loads of felines, the phrase Sie hat einen Vogel or she has a bird refers more to people who may not be working with a full deck, if you know what we mean.
It is thought that this popular German phrase stems from an old folk belief that crazy people had tiny animals taking up residence in their heads. We don’t know about you, but we think it would be way better to hear something like a cute little squirrel or rabbit in our head rather than just plain ol’ voices.
But now you know if you hear someone saying Sie hat einen Vogel around you they may think you’re one cat away from cuckoo.
Share this with anyone crazy about our Haus, and stay tuned for more must-know phrases.
